My 17 hour, three airport trip from New York to Johannesburg, South Africa.  All happening on New Year’s day.  I don’t have any xanax, ambian, etc. and will most likely have a slight pounding in the brain.  I’ve been preparing myself for the day, but I can’t say I’m ready.  Can you blame me? p.s. I’m not complaining because I’ll be spending January in...

Saturday Morning
I know I have been downtown.  Opening my wallet to reveal the contents, having been transformed into little white strips of evidence, alluding to the night’s generosity.

The Spine of A Snowman - David Berman
… Yesterday the robot had been asking him about snowmen. He asked if they had minds. No, the caretaker said, but he’d seen one that had a raccoon burrowed up inside the head. “Most had a carrot nose, some coal, buttons, and twigs for arms, but others were more complex. Once they started to melt, things would rise up from inside the body. Maybe a gourd, which was an...

The Revenant by Billy Collins
I am the dog you put to sleep, as you like to call the needle of oblivion, come back to tell you this simple thing: I never liked you—not one bit. When I licked your face, I thought of biting off your nose. When I watched you toweling yourself dry, I wanted to leap and unman you with a snap. I resented the way you moved, your lack of animal grace, the way you would sit in a chair...

My brother, the MD [Text Message]
Me: why does your face turn red when drinking?
Ryan: your liver breaks alcohol down to acetaldehyde then to acetic acid. Acetaldehyde is a toxic compound that causes dilation of blood vessels in the face/neck. When the blood vessels in your face dilate it is like bringing more blood closer to the surface of the skin and appears red. Asians often have mutated copy of the enzyme that removes acetaldehyde so this builds up on their system causing the "Asian flush."
